The interview

Can you tell our readers a little bit about yourself?

I’m Cassandra Spiteri and I’m 32 years old. I am an actor, and I also work in the inclusion sector. Have a passion for the arts.

I studied art and design which helped me gain 8 years of working experience in the interiors sector straight after MCAST. I also managed to get a first-year degree ATCL in Speech and Drama during COVID, and my aim is to get fully qualified in acting, and I’m also an Undergraduate in Education. I’m a foodie, a cinephile, love travelling, fashion, photography, DIY and planting.

I believe that being mindful is one of the most beautiful abilities one can learn and appreciate in life.

How did you first get into acting, and what inspired you to pursue it as a career?

I started taking part in school plays and musicals and I believe that those events and going to the cinema from a young age were definitely the inspiration. As a matter of fact, I felt a huge void when I didn’t do anything after finishing secondary, and unfortunately, that carried on for about 11 years. I didn’t stop going to theatres watching plays, musicals and films, but, I only managed to do a couple of extra roles during that period, and I knew I had the ability to deliver something more than that.

Are there any actors or actresses who have influenced or inspired you in your journey?

Lots of them. I watch a lot of productions and I find it very difficult to just pinpoint the talent that inspires me because there’s A LOT of talent out there.

How has being from Malta influenced your approach to acting and your artistic identity?

I believe that watching both local and foreign stories have helped a lot. Picking only one of them would, very likely, have made a different-negative impact.

What challenges have you faced as an actress in Malta, and how have you overcome them?

The whole job itself is a challenge in general. It’s about re-inventing yourself… especially when you have to deal with audition rejections. Being an actor in Malta, unfortunately, is even more challenging. Our country doesn’t have guilds, agents etc. therefore it’s not an easy ride at all, and the mentioned disadvantages are self-explanatory. One has to be prepared for the uncertainties that they have to face when receiving roles. So, I guess that being mindful is definitely the key to moving on.

How do you prepare for a new role? Do you have any specific techniques or rituals?

Read the full script and get an idea of the characters; research is essential especially if the story focuses on a certain period; learn the lines by heart; understand the tempo, volume, the stillness or the grotesque pace; do vocal warmups; wear part of the costume or a prop which can be more helpful during the rehearsal process.

Are there any specific genres or types of characters that you enjoy portraying the most?

Yes. I love historical, period and medieval stories and would love to portray characters of past eras.

Are there any cultural or historical aspects of Malta that you would like to explore through your acting?

Being a war story enthusiast, I’d love to be part of stories related to WWI, WWII or even the Great Siege of Malta.

What has been your most rewarding experience as an actress, either on or off the stage/screen?

I believe that the ride of each experience is rewarding. Each one gave me progress that helped me do better for the next one, and the next one.

Have you ever had to learn a different accent or dialect for a role? If so, how do you approach that process?

Yes, I am skilled to do several. I always had a love for them so I’ve been practising for a long time, and luckily enough I had the opportunity to portray roles with different accents. I usually still train the lines with my acting coach especially to prepare for an audition.

Are there any directors or actors you would love to collaborate with in the future? And are there any dream roles or projects you have in mind?

There are plenty and I feel like I haven’t even started yet… so there are loads!

How do you balance your personal life with your acting career, considering the demands of the industry?

It needs a lot of managing. I live a healthy life and do my best to enjoy the ride even though it’s struggling. Since I’m in a situation where I do most of the things myself related to my career, I’ve learned that I need to set goals regardless if they’re short or long, and delegate when necessary.

Can you share any interesting or funny behind-the-scenes stories from your experiences on set or on stage?

I was told to hold a specific prop on set which later in the day I had to use and improvise a scene that the director and the scriptwriter agreed and decided to add…turned out it was a prank.

What advice would you give to aspiring actors and actresses, particularly those from Malta?

If you have the passion for it, I can assure you that you will not think otherwise. Yes, it’s true, our local situation is a struggle, but I promise you that whatever comes your way, as long as you’re selective, will always be rewarding and helps you grow your talent.

Can you share any advice on the auditioning process and how to make a lasting impression in a competitive industry?

Be positive, be yourself, and show them what you’ve got.

Do you have any other artistic pursuits outside of acting, such as writing, directing, or producing?

Yes, I am also into set dressing.

Finally, how do you stay motivated and inspired as an actress, especially during periods of creative block or rejection?

Re-invent yourself. Be mindful.
